Whereas most up-and-coming alternative bands of the early '90s borrowed from the leaders of the pack (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, etc.), Blind Melon were an exception to the rule -- their roots lay in classic rock (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin). And while a promising career lay ahead of them, tragedy would ultimately end the band abruptly. The group came together in 1989 in Los Angeles, although all their respective members had migrated there from other U.S. locales (singer Shannon Hoon from Indiana; guitarist Christopher Thorn from Pennsylvania; and guitarist Rogers Stevens, bassist Brad Smith, and drummer Glenn Graham all hailed from Mississippi). The complete opposite of all the glossed-up glam metal that was permeating the Sunset Strip at the time, the quintet used a refreshing back-to-basics approach, both musically and visually (giving off a heavy retro vibe early on). The band considered several names -- Brown Cow, Mud Bird, Naked Pilgrims, and Head Train -- before agreeing on Blind Melon, a phrase that Smith's father would use to describe a couple of hippie neighbors from back home in Mississippi.
Seguir leyendo... >>

After watching this video I was left with a mixture of frustration, wrath and fear. For a start, the man that states that water should be privatized (YES, PRIVATIZED) is in a place of power: he basically runs a business in which 4.5 million people are employed and depend on.

Felt fear because of what the future might bring. And wrath to watch the huge lake that lies besides the office in which the interview was being held. It's opening frame show the sign "Avenue Nestlé".
Seguir leyendo... >>

Ladies and Gentlemen, proudly bringing to you this fabulous band big in the 60's & 70's still touring to date!!

The Stylistics was formed in Philadelphia, PA in 1966 from two groups, "The Percussions" and "The Monarchs". When members from each group were drafted or went on to further their education, the remaining members under the guidance of their English teacher Beverly Hamilton joined forces and changed the name to "The Stylistics". After working locally for a number of years, the group was approached by Bill Perry who asked if they would be interested in recording. Their first song "You're a Big Girl Now" was recorded at Virtue Recording Studio, a local studio in Philadelphia. This song was written by the group guitarist at the time, Robert "Doc" Douglas and Road Manager, Marty Bryant. The sessions cost Bill Perry a little over $500.00 to produce and was released locally. It was soon picked up in the tri-state area and before long, it became a number 1 hit in Philadelphia and a few other cities. Bill was interested it promoting the record national but didn't have the resources. He decided to contact Avco Records and made a deal. Rumor has it, Bill received over $10,000.00 from Avco of which the group never saw a dime. After the success of "You're A Big Girl Now", Avco wanted to naturally follow up with an album release. Hit veteran producer Tom Bell was contacted and was hired to produce the group's first album. The album was entitled "The Stylistics" and from that album came "Stop, Look, Listen to your Heart", "You Are Everything" and "Betcha By Golly Wow". The success of the first album was phenomenal for that time along with an unheard release of six singles in total. The ball continued to roll with the release of their second album entitled "Round Two". The Stylistics were becoming known as the Philly group with the sweet love songs. (Check out Discography for the full list of album releases.) Herbert Murrell and Airrion Love are the remaining original members of The Stylistics. Friends since junior high school, Herb and Airrion have managed to keep their institution of 70's music alive. It was thought to be the end of the Stylistics following the departure of their original lead singer, but as in life "THE SHOW MUST GO ON"
Seguir leyendo... >>

North Korea lies somewhere between a 1930′s Soviet Union frozen in time and a dark, futuristic vision of society... as imagined back in the 70′s.

Land of Whispers' invites you to visit arguably the most unique and isolated travel destination in the world - not to criticize, but to observe and listen. Aside from usual highlights such as Pyongyang or Arirang, this unique one-man documentary brings you to areas such as Chongjin or Wonson, still virtually unknown to even google or wikipedia. There, I attempt to pierce through the ever-present 'national mythology' and as much as possible, I try to connect with people - such as the waitress mesmerized by tablet computers, or a tour guide cautiously fascinated by modern pop culture.
Seguir leyendo... >>

I recently got a new pc and it comes with the new Win8 OS installed. Unfortunately it's the basic version ( of course! ) so I thought of upgrading it for a full experience. I was amazed by the discovery I found: apart from being expensive, which led me to take in account for a downgrade to Win7 (the current OS I'm using and familiar with) the Pro version brings along a downgrade path but I'll have to pay for both; the pro version and the Win7. Go Figure!

Seguir leyendo... >>

Jazz that nobody asked for

An Animation of a Psychological Phenomenon We All Know

You know what it feels like when, no matter how hard you try to shake it, you can’t get that song out of your head. Psychologists have a technical name for this phenomenon. They call it an “earworm,” referring to those songs that “arrive without permission and refuse to leave when we tell them to.” In the video above, the Danish design agency Benny Box has created a short animated film — called Jazz that nobody asked for – that serves as an “ode to all those unwanted songs out there, that have nowhere to go.” The music taunting the main character is “Quaker City Jazz” (1937) by Jan Savitt and His Top Hatters Orchestra. If you’ve had your own earworm — your own maddening soundtrack for this film — let us know in the comments section below.
Seguir leyendo... >>

Too stressed out by your daily routine? Press play and enjoy one the most exquisite romantic era composer: Frederic Chopin playing the entire Nocturnes series.

Although a few major pianists, notably Glenn Gould, have dismissed his music as excessively ornamental and trivial, Frédéric Chopin has long been recognized as one of the most significant and individual composers of the Romantic age. The bulk of his reputation rests on small-scale works that in other hands would have been mere salon trifles: waltzes, nocturnes, preludes, mazurkas, and polonaises (the last-named two groups reflecting his fervent Polish nationalism). These works link poetically expressive melody and restless harmony to high technical demands. Even his etudes survive as highly appealing concert pieces by emphasizing musical as well as technical values.
Seguir leyendo... >>

The Last Farmer - Throughout the world, agriculture from small farmers provides food for 70 percent of the population, while industrial agriculture only supplies 30 percent. But, ironically, most of the 2.8 million people living in poverty around the world are farmers. The documentary "The Last Farmer" highlights how small-scale farmers are suffering from poverty as a result of globalization and the growing shift towards industrial agriculture.

Directed by Giuliano Girelli, the documentary follows three farmers and their families in Indonesia, Guatemala, and Burkina Faso throughout their day. It draws attention to the struggles they face from lack of agricultural diversity, diminishing soil fertility, food insecurity, and decreasing incomes. The video also includes commentary from experts about the effects of globalization all over the world. Full Documentary 1 hour, 27 minutes.
Seguir leyendo... >>

Cast by Shakespeare as a deformed tyrant who murdered two princes in the Tower of London, Richard was slain as he fought to keep his crown at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, crying out: "A horse! A horse!
Finding cheap airflight tickets can be dreadfull and filled with agony. But do not dispair, there are people that do take in account this and work for a better experience. For instance, economist Makot Watanabe has sort out a formula to know when is the best time to purchase airline tickets which is known as the "eight week rule"

[Mr Watanabe] has calculated that the optimum time to buy an airline ticket is eight weeks in advance of flying.

His yet-to-be-published findings also suggests that airline tickets are cheaper when purchased in the afternoons, rather than the mornings, prompting him to speculate that airlines are assuming business travellers will book their tickets at work in the morning on the company account, whereas leisure travellers are more likely to book from home in the afternoon.
Seguir leyendo... >>
