I can't say I'm any kind of musician, artist or designer but I do like cooking and eating food and I consider myself a bit of a whizz in the kitchen, an amateur chef of sorts. I love trying new recipes and cooking for my friends and like to mix up recipes by established chefs with my own ideas.

My favorite chefs would have to be Jamie Oliver (nothing beats his easy-to-prepare meals) and Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall.

Top Tune: Michael Jackson The Way You Make Me Feel

Michael Jackson has made so many best song-worthy entries but I think The Way You Make Me Feel has to be one of my all time favorites (the song and the music video combined).... although The Man in the Mirror and I Can't Stop Loving You come in close second and thirds.

It was recorded back in 1987 (was that really 25 years ago now?!) and appeared on the album Bad. You can't deny he was a musical genius.

Google Olympic Doodles

The Olympics have been and gone again already. Can you believe it? And as usual I haven´t managed to watch half of the events that I´d planned. But I am delighted that the USA made it out on top and beat China wooo hooo.

I don´t know if you´ve noticed but Google has been dedicating their Google logo on their home page to the London Olympics over the last few weeks using a different doodle each day in line with the events taking place on different days. I don´t know who drew them but I really like the artwork. Some were even interactive logos that probably kept you mesmerized for hours instead of working (that is if you were observant enough to notice that google had changed their logo).

Johnny Depp My Favourite Celeb

Not only is Johnny Depp one of the finest looking men on the planet but he´s also a very gifted actor and an interesting individual. Some people would call him weird but I prefer to call him quirky.

He´s been in a long list of great movies. Some of my favorites have to be Edward Scissorhand, What´s Eating Gilbert Grape, Benny and Joon, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Blow. Oh and of course his role as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean.

My Favorite Olympics Event: Synchronized Swimming

Here comes my entry for the weekend challenge. My favorite Olympic event has to be Synchronized Swimming or water ballet as it was known back in the day. I find it fascinating to watch the way the swimmers gracefully swim, dance and perform gymnastics in the water in perfectly choreographed routines in time to music. But while they make it look quite easy, it actually demands advanced water skills and requires a whole lot of strength, endurance, flexibility, grace, artistry and precise timing.... not to mention the exceptional breath control and lung capacity when upside down underwater.

11 Everyday things that are terrifying under a microscope

We never really consider what every day things look like up close and it's probably a good thing because what things really look like under the microscope (and the microscopic creatures crawling on them) is really quite horrifying. In fact, they're the stuff of nightmares. I'm having trouble looking at any of the following objects in the same light again. I don't know how I'm going to sleep tonight. Olympics Opening Ceremony

So what did YOU think of the London Olympics 2012 opening ceremony? Reviews have been mixed but I personally thought Britain put on a good show. They're good at poking fun at themselves and captured the essence of British eccentricity, tradition and quirkiness - maypole dancing, a flock of sheep, the Sex Pistols, David Beckham in a speedboat with the Olympic flame,Mary Poppins, references to Industrial Revolution, dancing nurses and the highlight...the James Bond and Queen Elizabeth II video. It was encouraging her to see her assuming a less serious role for once and having some fun although she looked pretty solemn and miserable during the ceremony. Maybe she was sulking because she didn't actually get to jump out of the helicopter. And then of course there's the customary fireworks display.

Scientology is one of those things that everyone has heard of but no-one really knows anything about. It's one of those elusive cults that appears to have captured the hearts of half of Hollywood. If you've been keeping up to date with celebrity gossip, you'll prob know that there has been a lot of press recently on Katie Holme's and Tom Cruise's break up and the involvement of the Church of Scientology to which Tom Cruise is a devotee. According to one article I read, if their daughter Suri was admitted into the Church of Scientoloy, she would face being "audited" with an "e-meter", which measures responses to questions such as "Have you ever lied to a teacher?" and "Have you ever gotten yourself dirty on purpose?" She could also face joining the subgroup Sea Org, in which the most dedicated Scientologists sign a billion-year pledge of allegiance and wear maritime-style uniforms.!? Who wants that for their six year old daughter?!

So I thought long and hard about what my favourite person, place, thing or animal was for the #weekendchallenge and for some reason I couldn't think of any one person or place that really stood out in my mind (I guess I have a lot of heroes and favorite places) and then I saw the screen saver on my computer (which is a photo of a giraffe) and decided to write a post about giraffes. To me, they are one of the most beautiful and unique animals in the animal kingdom with their long necks, dappled fur and gorgeous long eyelashes.

The Miami Cannibal ... and the rest

In light of the recent horror story about the real life Miami cannibal, a.k.a. the man who eats face, I thought I'd do a cannibal-themed post. So if you haven't heard the story yet, I'm talking about the guy who was caught last week chewing on the face of another man, both stark naked on a road in Miami, before he was shot by police.

Surveillance Drones Spotted near Chicago pre NATO Summit

There was a lot of buzz online about the security measures that were implemented last week leading up to the controversial NATO Summit in Chicago to protect dignitaries and world leaders from the wrath of us humans and our right to protest.

For starters Blackhawk helicopters with armed men were seen flying between high rises in Chicago in the days before the summit, supposedly a "routine training exercise," but that sounds like too much of a coincidence to me. It was clearly the government's way of monitoring the backlash.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day weekend has come around again already. First celebrated on May 30, 1868, Memorial Day (aka Decoration Day) is one of our oldest holidays, commemorating the lives of those who tragically died serving in US services (and for most people it also marks the start of the summer vacation season).

I don't believe in war but I do believe in acknowledging the people who lost their lives through it.

Solar Eclipse 2012 Through a Lens

What is it about solar eclipses that gets people so hyped up? It's happened before and we all know what to expect and it lasts a matter of minutes but it's one of those things that when you witness it for real makes your skin go all prickly and everything seems a little unreal in those moments of day-time darkness. It's quite a strange sensation.

Last Sunday, skywatchers in Asia, the Pacific and the western U.S. were treated to a rare annular solar eclipse (hope those of you who saw it were all wearing your protective eye wear). Unlike a total eclipse (when the moon passes in front of the sun directly blocking the entire thing) an annular eclipse leaves what looks like a ring of fire around the moon as it doesn't cover the whole sun). It was the first annular eclipse visible in the U.S. in nearly 18 years, according to NASA, and National Geographic reports that it will be more than 10 years before another annular eclipse is visible from the mainland U.S.
