Here's the report on the Olympics. While everybody is busy watching the opennings, and welcoming the different countries Olympic Teams, I thought of making a bit of research and bring some memories of what other sports where being held, say 100 years ago.

Ballooning

Men's ballooning was demonstrated at the 1900 Paris Olympics but never took off as an official event.

Pigeon Racing

Pigeon racing was featured in the Summer Olympic Games unofficial programme for 1900. No results have been found from the 7 pigeon events contested. Hilariously and rather morbidly the pigeon racing was held alongside pigeon shooting. Tiny medals were made for the winning pigeons and can fetch thousands on eBay.

Cannon Shooting

Cannon shooting was a demonstration sport in the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris. The sport was considered a little bit antiquated and cannon balls were kind of on their way out by 1900.

Cycle Polo

Not quite the same as Polo on a horse but certainly more accessible. Cycle polo was a demonstration sport at the 1908 London Olympics with Ireland winning the gold, beating Germany.

And Twitter

You might think this is a bad joke, but actually I wanted to create a link between those "sports" that were left out of the event and racism. Amazingly, somethings apparently never seem to expire, which leads to the question: is war inevitably a part of life?

I know that some people can take twitter as a therapy, where they express whatever goes through their minds, but this time, even though Vuola Papachristou publicly expressed her regret and explained that it was meant as a joke, she forgot that she's a public figure, and representative of her country on an international event such as this. She'll pay for it with almost everything she's worked for in the past couple of years, but she'll learn from it. I'm sure.
