Designer dogs have become a bit of a trend in recent years. When I say designer dog, I mean a dog that comes from two purebreds as opposed to a mutt which is a blend of two or more breeds. I'm talking about your Labradoodles (Labrador plus poodle), Goldendoodles (Golden Retriever plus poodle), puggles (Pug and beagle) and cavachons (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel + Bichon Frise) of the dog world. Or how about a Malitpoos (a mixture of a Maltese and a Poodle). In fact there are about 500 designer dog breeds nowadays, most of which have fancy, even ridiculous, sounding names.
You might be wondering how their lives compare with those of mutts and purebreds. Well, according to this infographic from Pet CareRx, they live longer believe it or not. And they cost 25 to 50% more than purebreds.
The concept of a designer dog is pretty ridiculous. And I feel like it's something we shouldn't really mess with. It's done purely for aesthetics. Shouldn't we just leave the poor dogs to mate with who they want to mate with? How would you like it if someone came and told you who you had to make babies with?
Although, having said that, Malitpoos are unbelievably cute:
