Henry Miller is one of my favorite American authors who wrote the book, The Tropic of Cancer. He was known for breaking with existing literary forms and developing a new sort of 'novel' that is a mixture of novel, autobiography, social criticism, philosophical reflection, surrealist free association, and mysticism, one that is distinctly always about and expressive of the real-life Henry Miller and yet is also fictional. Even if you have never read any of his books maybe you will appreciate these quotes. Thanks for reading!

"The one thing we can never get enough of is love. And the one thing we never give enough is love."

"If there is to be any peace it will come through being, not having."

“Our own physical body possesses a wisdom which we who inhabit the body lack. We give it orders which make no sense.”

“The moment one gives close attention to any thing, even a blade of grass it becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in itself.”

"Life, as it is called, is for most of us one long postponement."

"In expanding the field of knowledge we but increase the horizon of ignorance."

"Life has to be given a meaning because of the obvious fact that it has no meaning."

“Life moves on, whether we act as cowards or heroes. Life has no other discipline to impose, if we would but realize it, than to accept life unquestioningly. Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy, and strength, if faced with an open mind. Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such.”

“The tragedy of it is that nobody sees the look of desperation on my face. Thousands and thousands of us, and we're passing one another without a look of recognition.”

“What distinguishes the majority of men from the few is their ability to act according to their beliefs”

“In the attempt to defeat death man has been inevitably obliged to defeat life, for the two are inextricably related. Life moves on to death, and to deny one is to deny the other.”

“There is no salvation in becoming adapted to a world which is crazy.”

“Everybody says sex is obscene. The only true obscenity is war.”
