You wouldn't think that concrete would be a very suitable material to make a handbag out of, indeed any kind of fashion accessory. The material hardly screams feminine or fashion (rather industry and construction) but Hungarian designer Katalin Ivanka has succeeded in creating a very fetching line of dinky handbags out of this very material, concrete.

The designer (who heads the Ivanka Design Studio) has played around with textures and metallic tones making for surprisingly edgy, stylish clutches and small hand bags which have a somewhat futuristic feel. The concrete is combined with leather to give it a more functional, stylish form. The bags were first unveiled at TENT London as part of the Genesis Accessories collection. The designer has also produced other products out of concrete.

Of course it's hard to tell from a set of photos what the bags look and feel like in reality but they don't appear to have a bulky quality. They must carry some weight though.

According to a spokesperson for the fashion house, “Beginning with a model made almost entirely of concrete, the evolution of the collection explores the effects produced by alternating the ratio between concrete and leather.” Interesting concept...

What do we think ladies? I'm quite a fan but would probably stick to one with a higher ratio of leather. Considering the amount of junk I cart around in my handbags, I wouldn't want to be lugging anything around that's too heavy.
