Laura Mvula is my new favorite singer. One year ago, she was working on the reception desk for the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. The symphonic ensemble is home to swathes of talented musicians and composers, so Laura’s heart was in the right place, but her head was telling her she needed more out of life.
“I was extremely depressed by the fact I knew I wanted to do music but I couldn’t afford to. A few major people came through those doors, from concert hall conductors to composers. Sometimes they would engage in conversation with me; they’d say, ‘wow, you write music?’ - I lived for those moments.”
"Nina Simone sings the Beach Boys," as one reviewer put it, while another coined a new genre in honour of her soulful vocals and florid soundscapes: gospeldelia.
