The current implementation of 3D, regardless of the technology used is basically the same: to show a different image to each eye, with some variation in the angle in order to perceive the depth that generates the 3D effect.
The image below shows the simple concept: two images in rapid succession with different angles. Seeing it, our brain interprets depth and presto! 3D!
