Since 1920, when Berni (1905-1981) exhibited his works for the first time in his home town, Rosario, while he was still a child, sixty one years of unrelenting labor and commitment with art distinguished his creative and intellectual course, dedicated to help the concerns of the man of his time. His first landscapes told about the environment of his family and different aspects of his country. Europe connected him with the treasures of the artistic and cultural traditions, as well as with the most innovative aesthetic and philosophic vanguards.

In 1932 he brought Surrealism into the Argentine visual arts, but soon, as a response to urging social and political needs in his country, he embarked in the creation of a modern critical realism, the activist standpoint and relentless penetration of which he never deserted.
